Hispanic Heritage Month: Jovita Idár


1885-1946
Jovita Idár was a journalist and an activist.

In 1885, Idár was born into a family of journalists in Laredo, Texas.   She was a reporter for her father's newspaper, "La Cronica. " She reported about discrimination against Mexican children and the  lynching Mexicans.

The Idár family organized the first  Mexican Congress in 1911, Jovita organized the women who would attend. Eventually those women became "La Lega Femenil Mexicanista (The League of Mexican Women).Idár became the president.


The group started free schools for Mexican children. They also helped the poor.  Ida also did her part during the Mexican Revolution.  She organized "The White Cross" to help the wounded and injured.
