Will "The Real Housewives of Miami" make us Latinas proud?

Seeing a Latina on television is usually a proud moment for me. Whether it’s Jennifer Lopez judging on American Idol or Eva Longoria playing one of those crazy women on Desperate Housewives.

And then there is Bravo TV's Real Housewives of Miami. When I heard Bravo was highlighting housewives in Miami, I though great—there has to be some Latinas on it.

Then I started seeing the promos for the show. Oh no…...

As you can see from the shows trailer, there's lots of cleavage, bling, backstabbing, and of course, women calling each other "bitches."   I guess those must be the ingredients for a reality show on Bravo.

Glenn Gavin, the media critic for the Miami Herald describes the housewives as trashy and superficial. OUCH! Even pointing out that one housewife calls herself the “Cuban Barbie.”

I don't know if these housewives have a lot of self-confidence or just big egos. I wonder if the Latinas on the show think we’ll really be proud of their performances, because it sure feels like they're going to feed right into the stereotypes of Latinas.

All I can hope is that these women realize that they have the power to make a difference.  They don't have to tear each other down or act like "bimbos" to gain stardom.

Obviously they have the beauty and brains to make it on Bravo TV.  Now if they can only show us Latinas that they will make us proud.
